Socially Acceptable Media

Not everything is ideal to share online.

A really great  question slid into our DMs asking if tagging their business Instagram account in the bio of her personal Instagram page was considered “best practice” for her. Normally we would say this  is totally fine to do, but it got us thinking and we knew he had to dive deeper on this topic for you. So here is some food for thought:

Let’s say you have a view point on a hot button issue that maybe isn’t exactly …. mainstream?

By the way - we just want to put it out there that it’s totally fine to have different view points, it’s what makes this world go ‘round for sure.

However…. When it comes to running your business Instagram page you might want to consider keeping your personal page set to private or not tagging your business page all together - and here’s why:

Contrary to popular belief, you actually aren't obligated to share every little thing on Instagram - shocker we know.

Example: (and yes this is a hypothetical example so don’t come at us over this!) Let’s say you have a business Instagram page that sells sourdough starter kits and your target market demographic is mainly women in their 30’s. Your business page is amazing, thriving even! … but you are of the personal opinion that baby and wedding showers are total bullsh*t.

This might not land well with your, predominantly female, audience (ahem your clients!).

We hereby give you permission to keep your opinions on potentially socially charged topics to your personal page that is set to PRIVATE.

Why? Because it is extremely easy for your followers and customers to find your personal page and see what you are all about as the actual real human being behind your thriving business account.

Now, whether you care about it or not, this may impact your business, your number of followers and who knows, you might even get some push back comments on your last post from a keyboard warrior or two.

Our advice is that it’s best to play it safe and keep very personal things and opinions on hot button topics to your personal page. We could go off on a tangent here about what to save for your personal ‘Gram vs what is Socially Acceptable to share on your business page but, we’ll save that for another blog post.

We want to know your thoughts on this topic -  If you have questions about what types of content is definitely not S.A. - hit us up! Find us on Instagram here @ sociallyacceptablemedia or comment below.

As always, thanks for being here and back again soon!

Keeping you Socially Acceptable online
